Greens condemn secret decision to upgrade nuclear weapons

NHS surgeon "A nuclear replacement for Britain’s Trident system is a threat to international stability", said Matt Follett, the Green Party’s candidate for Leicester South. "Tony Blair was wrong about Iraq. How can we trust him with an upgraded Trident?"

"Replacing Trident is one of several issues the Government has kept out of the election, which need a decision. Among them is nuclear power generation." Follett continued: "How can the UK press other states such as Iran and North Korea to renounce nuclear programmes whilst the UK plans a new British deterrent? Trident is useless against terrorists because they do not present a suitable target. But it does present a £10bn nuclear strike right at our schools and hospitals and pensions in the UK.

"The UK has made no progress towards disarmament in the past five years. Both the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives support retention of a British nuclear deterrent." Matt Follett concluded: "I want nuclear states like the UK to live up to their commitments to disarm and eliminate their nuclear weapons, under the UN’s 1968 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. The UK should become a leader in getting non-proliferation back on course and promote peaceful non-military solutions to the causes of conflict."
