Knighton by-election, November 4

Statement by candidate Matt Follett, Leicester Green Party

If elected I could provide more effective support to Knighton residents over a wider range of issues.

Less Traffic

* More traffic calming measure and some lower speed limits. More safety for children walking to school. More cycle routes, and walking routes.
* Home zones, to encourage use of some street space for other purposes than motorcars.
* Car share schemes at work, among small businesses and in neighbourhoods.
* Workplace parking charges and use the revenue to help fund transport jobs and strengthen public transport.
* An interconnected network of bus priority schemes linked to county buses and rail services, with services in favour of bus users.

Better Public Services

* Fund better services, rather than cutting council tax.
* Local libraries to be properly funded.
* Tackle social causes of crime through community forums involving education and youth initiatives.

Healthy Environment

* Give local people a proper say on planning issues so the needs of the community come before the interests of developers
* Ensure local shops and small businesses get fair treatment. They are the backbone of the local economy and community and prevent social isolation.
* Implementing a zero waste strategy will reduce waste and also create many green jobs.

This by-election gives the people of Knighton a chance to give the Council a fresh voice and ideas for action.

Vote for me, Matt Follett, on November 4.
