Leicester Green Party has thrown its weight behind the GM-Free Britain campaign by Friends of the Earth. 'The Green Party has been campaigning against all genetic modifications since GMOs were introduced around 10 years ago', said Bob Ball, a party spokesperson. 'Public feeling is still very strong on this issue.'
He continued, 'We will do all we can to make Leicester and Leicestershire a GM-Free zone. Both the Welsh Assembly and Devon County Council have voted against crop trials and to become GM-Free. The more self-declared GM-free areas there are in the UK, the harder it will be for the Government to introduce commercial growing of GM crops.'
Bob Ball concluded, ' We have written to Leicester Council urging that no GM crops are grown on land they control and to adopt a GM-free policy on all their goods and services. People need to write to the government and their local councils demanding GM-free status for Leicester and Leicestershire, under the European Union's GMO directive (2001/18/EC). Our key argument is that GM food is unnecessary and the potential damage to the environment and to our health will not be known until it's too late.'
