Darren Johnson, re-elected in Lewisham Green Gains

Readers and viewers of the local election results on May 4 2006 were told much about Labour losses and Tory gains, and even a disturbing clutch of gains for the BNP, but if they blinked they probably missed the fact that the Greens also did well. Our net gain of 20 (bringing us to a total of 91) compares with a Lib Dem net gain of 3.

Our gains included 4 in Norwich, taking the total to 9, and 5 in Lewisham, taking it to 6. We also gained councillors in Bristol (our first there), Sheffield and elsewhere.

Elections were not held in Leicester this time round, but these results augur well for us next year, especially in Castle Ward where Bob Ball dead-heated with a Labour candidate last time round. Unfortunately, it was Labour's Patrick Kitterick whose name emerged in the draw.
