Zina Zelter of ARROW (Active Resistance to the Roots of War) spoke to Leicester Green Party's September meeting about the proposed blockade at Faslane.
Faslane in Scotland is where the UK keeps its Trident nuclear weapons system, which consists of 4 nuclear submarines, each carrying 12 to 16 missiles which can deliver nuclear warheads about 10 times the size of the one used on Hiroshima. Trident is illegal under international law. The Government is now proposing to "upgrade" it in a way that will encourage further nuclear proliferation, and tie us to American foreign policy for decades more.
The idea of Faslane 365 is that hundreds of groups across the UK work together to blockade Faslane for a whole year. Each group (some of which will be interest-specific and some of which will be specific to geographic areas) will take on organizing a blockade for two days at Faslane. Thousands of people will be taking part in this and the idea is that each Block is self-organising. The campaign will not run unless at least 100 blocks sign up, and hope to start in October.
Zina encouraged Greens in Leicester to join either the Green Party's own part of this action on October 15-16, or the Leicester block on December 16-17.
