Save English Nature

It's no surprise that environmentalists are kicking up a storm over plans to abolish English Nature, a Government agency that champions the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity throughout England.  It recently upset the government with an unpalatable report on possible effects of GM on the countryside.

It would be very convenient for the Government for English Nature to close, just at a time when new roads and new airports are coming along. Environmentalists are worried we may get a dilution in environmental protection.  This would be a major concern for the East Midlands, which has probably lost more wildlife than any other region in England - and losses are continuing.

We have watchdogs for water, gas, electricity and so on. Why should English Nature, the watchdog for the English countryside, with a worldwide reputation, be forced to close?
