Ward Candidate




Aylestone Thomas O'Connell Thomas is a professional tree surgeon. He has lived in Aylestone Ward for three years. Many of his relatives also live in this ward.
Christine Worth Christine, a teaching assistant and former careers adviser, is happily married to Robin. She likes music and walking and has a keen interest in town twinning.




Belgrave Richard Fletcher Richard is an administrator at Leicester College. He is happily married to Sylvia and they both enjoy walking and cycling. Neither cycling or walking is enjoyable in Leicester, hence he is standing for the Greens for a cleaner, greener city with safer roads.
Jonathan Swift Jonathan has lived in Leicester for 10 years. He is a writer, some of whose work can be seen on the website www.madnotbad.co.uk under his pen name Jo Twist. He is particularly interested in third world issues, having lived in Zimbabwe for six years.




Braunstone Park & Rowley Fields Brian Fewster Brian Fewster Brian has lived in the ward for ten years. He has a Cambridge English degree and a Computing degree from De Montfort. After working for many years as a secondary school teacher, he now works in IT. He has been a candidate for the Green Party in local, national and European elections. He is an active member of WDM and an anti-globalisation campaigner. He is also a widely published poet.
Des Peake Des and Yvonne are a husband-and-wife team.
Yvonne Peake They are concerned about traffic pollution and think more should be done for the homeless.

Bob Ball Bob Ball The Green Party's first choice candidate in Castle, Bob has lived in the ward for seven years. As a 'shadow councillor' he has worked energetically on 'bread and butter' issues and taken-up over 60 Council-related matters of concern to people. He has had experience in community work and engineering management. He is a graduate of Leicester University, in politics and history, and an artist.
Chris Hughes Chris Hughes Chris has lived in Castle for two years. He campaigned successfully for non-genetically-modified food to be used in school meals provided by the Council. He wants reform of the debt-money system to fund higher social spending on the environment, education, welfare, health, transport and leisure, and to fund a citizens' income which could help to rationalise benefits and end the poverty trap.
Margaret Layton Margaret Layton Margaret is a Castle resident. Her key priorities include protecting allotments and greenfield sites against inappropriate development. As a board member of a local childcare charity she is a supporter of subsidised childcare for low income families. She is a graduate of Leicester University with a degree in law, and works for the Leicester Royal Infirmary in training and development

Geoff Forse Geoff Forse Geoff has lived in the Woodgate area for nearly fifteen years, running the Resources Centre for the Woodgate Residents Association. He has stood in all local elections for the old St. Augustines ward since 1991. He also stood in the 1997 General election and the 1994 and 1999 European elections. He is currently Elections Co-ordinator for the national Green party.
Mark Sperry Mark Sperry Mark was formerly Chair of the Liberal Democrats in Leicester West. He joined the Greens three years ago because, in his own words, "I was convinced that political issues relating to the environment were the most important, and these were not being satisfactorily considered by my old party."




Freemen Matthew Gough Matt Gough Matthew is a Christian, married to Clare. He is a qualified social worker working for a mental health charity as an advocate. He was the Green Party Candidate in the 2001 parliamentary elections against Patricia Hewitt in Leicester West and was the only candidate whose number of votes increased.
Tom O'Connell Tom O'Connell Tom has lived in the ward for fifteen years. He runs Evergreen Gardening Services with his son (Aylestone candidate Thomas Jnr). He is active in inter-faith and race relations issues. A former Lib Dem, he joined the Greens during the 2001 general election campaign.




Knighton Simon Bennett Ben Foley Simon has lived in Knighton for almost fourteen years. Having worked in the public, private and voluntary sectors, he is now a systems architect for a pharmaceutical distribution company. A former lecturer at De Montfort University, he has written two textbooks on computing. His interests include natural history and birdwatching. He is married with two sons: one is studying at Edinburgh University, the other is at Lancaster School.
Indira Nath Indira has lived in Leicester for four years. A member of the Green Party since 1990, she has been a candidate in both district and county council elections in the South West. Interested in walking and music, she is a member of Leicestershire Footpath Association and the Leicester branch of the Society of Recorder Players.

Rushey Mead Ben Foley Ben Foley Ben is an active wheelchair user and campaigner on disability issues. He has been campaigning against the war in Iraq. He is married with two young children and is a member of the cyclists' organisation CTC. He works as a Research Fellow at De Montfort University. One of his greatest pleasures in life is watching Arsenal play football.
Barry Pettitt Barry Pettitt Barry is currently seeking work as an electrical engineer. As such, he understands the need for alternative energy, especially wind turbines. He is a regular blood donor.

Spinney Hills Christopher Davies Christopher Davies Christopher is a self-employed training consultant working in education and the corporate field and with individual clients. He is the artistic director of Bamboozle Theatre Company, which specialises in working with students who have learning and behavioural difficulties. He has been a member of the Green Party since 1979 and has stood as a candidate in local, parliamentary and European elections. He lives in Aylestone with his wife Sue, two cats and an English bull terrier called Chester.

Stoneygate Matt Follet Matt Follet Matt has worked as a community safety officer for Leicestershire police, and has also been in involved in criminology, community safety and policing courses for the University of Leicester. He therefore has a particular interest in issues of public safety and quality of life. He is currently doing a Phd in Community Safety issues at the Open University.
Jill Cunningham Jill Cunningham After working at the BBC in London, Jill became a full-time mother to her four children. Now a grandmother, she believes strongly in the need for inter-cultural understanding, especially among young people. Convinced of the need for alternative energy, she had solar panels installed on her house.

Thurncourt Murray Frankland Murray Frankland Formerly a management consultant, Murray now spends much of his time as unpaid administrator of the charity Salt of the Earth, which he founded in 1988 to support salt-pan workers in a drought-stricken area of South India. He is a former professional airman and is a member of Ex-Services CND. A keen organic gardener, he is the Steward of Colchester Road Allotments.
Janet Elisita Janet Elisita Janet works in a family centre. She is married to Murray Frankland and shares the interests listed above. She and Murray are also committed cyclists. They are members of a car-share club for the occasional longer journey, and live in the ward in an ecologically renovated house.

Western Park Mark Aspey Mark is a team leader of a drugs and alcohol therapeutic organisation. He has two children, with a third due any day now. He and his family are disillusioned with New Labour and see the Green alternative as the only way forward.
Chris Seal Chris Seal Chris works as a window cleaner. He is a charity fund-raiser and is active on third world issues and animal rights. He believes that we need to live more simply and considerately in order to reduce our demands on the world's limited resources and fragile ecosystem.
